• Barnstaple Penrose Alms Houses Fund Raising Appeal

A fundraising campaign is being launched to help pay for urgent repairs at Barnstaple's ancient Penrose Almshouses in Litchdon Street.
The 400-year-old colonnade of Barnstaple’s ancient Penrose Almshouses is in danger of ‘crumbling into the street’ unless urgent repairs are made, the charity that looks after the building has warned.
Years of water damage has rotted the beams holding up the roof, and the damage is so serious that an entire length of lead guttering – dating back to 1627 – had to be removed and replaced with plastic guttering last month amid fears it would collapse.
Trustees say the Grade I listed building – one of only a handful in Barnstaple – needs urgent repairs to ensure its conservation.
