Latest Kit Purchase - Tokina Macroscopic Lens

My latest kit purchases have been reasonably cheap in the order of things, the latest addition to my working collection is the macroscopic lens, Tokina macro 100mm F2.8 ATX PRO. A very specialised piece of kit, which had fantastic reviews in the national photographic media.

Andy at my local camera store also raved about it and after a few visits and close up inspections and a few tests I finally purchased this invaluable piece of kit.

was involved in Nigel Banks, WHY project and we had covered and photographed most of his collection of canvas not just for insurance purposes but also for me to create an A3 portable portfolio of his work, and a digital copy of the collection for the express purpose of reproducing his wonderful work at a later date and also making the images ready for future Public Relations and his website once he has completed his degree course, which we both finally achieved with lots of readapting and hard work.

The final photographs involved me taking some close up pictures of his WHY project jewellery, up until this point we were doing so well but it became obvious that a macroscopic lens would be required not only to photograph the WHY jewellery but also to capture the Gold and Silver Hallmarks which adorned the beautiful jewellery.

An initial test was conducted in the local camera store and I could see the future potential of this lens, not only were the close up pictures of the Hallmarks, crisp and clear but I was really impressed at how close I could get to the Brietling watches that I was photographing. This lens I thought has serious potential and I was right.

Once purchased it was straight into action photographing Nigels Gold and Silver Hallmarks and they came out well, very crisp and very clear with the most amazing detail. The lens has opened up a whole new world of photography for me in the macro field, have had photographic projects for restaurants, with the Chef cooking up the delicious food me to photograph and the macro lens has certainly been able to cope with the rich textures and colours of the food. The food photography is a unique area that I had never envisaged getting involved in, but the results that I have had are quiet outstanding and the number of projects is increasing with time.
